While one person may request a handicapped parking space in a residential area, anyone displaying a valid state issued permit is entitled to use that space. Accessible Parking Permits and New Haven Metered Spaces Metered Spaces The City of New Haven does require all parkers at meters, even those with handicapped parking placards, to pay the metered parking rate within the specific requirements of that meter. The ParkMobile app is also available ( ). To aid those individuals with disabilities that may have difficulty returning to meters when time is expiring, the city offers a number of payment alternatives including multiple phone apps such as GoNewHaven, which allow for additional time to be added to any meter remotely via your smart phone ( ). As only state issued disabled permit holders are allowed to use these spaces, the blue parking meters must be paid while in use. These on-street spaces are designated by a blue sign, and in downtown New Haven they feature a blue parking meter. Another benefit of displaying your permit is the ability to park in designated handicapped parking spaces. ![]() ![]() This means that you can park in a spot for as long as you want, however if payment is required the spot must be paid for during all applicable hours. While your state issued disabled parking permit exempts you from posted time limits anywhere in the state, it does not offer exemption from meter payment.
